DAY TEN - Thermal Walk and Waterfalls

Saturday, October 26

We started the day at the Orakei Korako Thermal Park.  To get to the thermal site we took a ferry.  The site has small geysers, flowing hot water and mud pots.  We had a safety briefing before we started the one hour walk around the site.

Afterwards we visited the Haka Waterfall. The channel that leads to the waterfall is the only way water can leave Lake Taupo.  The lake is the largest in the country and was formed in the caldera of a volcano.  When the volcano erupted, the effects in the atmosphere of the dust from the explosion was recorded in ancient times by the Romans and the Chinese.

Before leaving for Hawkes Bay, we stopped for lunch at a colorful cafe.
