DAY NINE - Glow Worms and Hot Springs

Friday, October 25

Our B&B breakfast included a New Zealand peanut butter that the U.S. astronauts bring with them to the international space station and a local honey that won a top international award in the U.S.

After breakfast, we took a tour at a cavern featuring Glow Worms.  Our tour was with the Spellbound company that includes both a boat ride and a walk in a cave made famous by Sir David Attenborough.  Attenborough is well known for his wildlife documentaries (many for the BBC) and filmed the glow worms in this cave.

It takes about 20 minutes for a person's eyes to adjust to the dark and begin see the glow of the worms.  The worms appear like individual dots that together resemble constellations of stars across the roof of the cavern.  Although called worms, they are actually predatory fly larva that use light to lure insects onto a sticky, silk line that hangs from their mouth. Yum.

We also visited a second cave as part of the tour.  This walk was about the features of limestone caves.

We also met a local farmer and his four dogs on the road near the tour company.

Our next stop was an Airbnb for the night.  The  alpacas and emus on their grounds were curious about us.  We found time later to visit a local hot spring.
