DAY EIGHT - ON THE ROAD

Thursday, October 24

We were on the road today to the Waitomo area to look at glowworms in limestone caves tomorrow.  On the way we stopped in the town of Te Aroha.  Here we soaked in the mineral waters of the Mokena Geyser.  This area was a popular spa in the 1890s and many of the buildings are maintained in the original Edwardian style.

Then we went to the Karangahake Gorge for a walk around an area where gold was mined from 1897 to 1952.  We followed a path with a tunnel about two-thirds of a mile long and a suspension bridge.

On the way to our B&B for the night we saw one our favorite signs at a railroad crossing.
