Madeleine joined us last night. We all had breakfast at the Hawke's Bay farmer's market in the morning. Then it was off to the nearby town of Napier for an Art Deco walking tour.
Napier was destroyed by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 1931. After more than 600 aftershocks over two weeks, the town and surrounding area was about six feet higher. In addition thousands of acres of land that had been under water became new ground for the eventual expansion of the city as we see it today.
When the town was rebuilt, almost everything was constructed in the Art Deco style. The living legacy of this reconstruction makes Napier one of the world's best preserved collections of small-scale Art Deco buildings and architecture. Our walking tour highlighted many of the best preserved buildings.
In the afternoon we visited the Otatara Pa Historic Preserve. Here we walked around the remnants of a fortified Maori village.
