DAYS TWENTY THREE and FOUR - Lake Tekapo

Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9

After arriving in Tekapo we walked down to the lake.  There is a church there built in the 1930s to honor the pioneers who settled the area.  A statue to the Collie dog was close by and recognized the role of these dogs in managing herds of sheep.

The next day we visited the observatory on nearby Mount John and walked the summit hike around the top of the mountain.

In the evening we took part in a guided tour to look at stars on some private land. This area is part of the Dark Sky Project where the surrounding land gets limited or no light at night from buildings and homes.  This makes it possible to get a good view of the night sky.  We were lucky to see the southern lights (aurora australis) due to recent sun storm activity.
