DAYS THIRTY TWO and THREE - Wanaka

Sunday and Monday, November 17 and 18

We left Dunedin for Wanaka to spend two rather than one day.  Our travel plans changed for the next few days.  We had intended to go to the west coast of the South Island to visit the other side of Mount Cook.  However, a landslide on November 9 closed the road to this area. The road remains closed with no detour.  So here we are!

On the way to Wanaka we visited two vineyards that are not open to the public.  Two Paddocks is owned by the actor Sam Neill and Black Ridge is the location for the Under the Vines television series.

On arrival in Wanaka we visited the Rippon Vineyard for a wine tasting.  This is one of the oldest vineyards in the country.  The view from their tasting rooms is quite nice.

We also stopped by the lake to look at a much photographed tree in the water.  Busloads of people come to take a picture of this tree that grows from the roots of an older tree when the water level was lower.  We took a picture too!

The next day we walked the Rob Roy Glacier track.  This trail has been closed for over a year and opened again just before we arrived.
