Leaving Mount Cook behind, we made our way to Timaru. Our first stop was the Te Ana Maori Rock Art Center. We took their guided in-house rock art tour. As part of the tour we also learned about Maori history and traditions including seasonal food gathering. The boats used to navigate rivers in the search for food reminded us of the reed boats we saw on Lake Titicaca.
In the evening we went to Caroline Bay to watch nesting Blue Penguins come in from the sea after sunset. These are the smallest penguins in the world.
