DAY THIRTEEN - Hawke's Bay Area

Tuesday, October 29

Our morning started at the Te Mata Peak hiking paths.  There is a choice of paths leading to an overlook of Hawke's Bay.  We chose one that passed through a grove of California Redwood trees.  The redwoods were planted here in the 1920s.

Then we went to the town of Hastings to look at Art Deco buildings including some constructed in the Spanish Mission style.

Hastings was also the home of the New Zealand artist Rita Angus. Born in 1908, her paintings are noted for creating a distinctive vision of a new and modern New Zealand in the 1950s and 60s.
