We drove to Kaikoura this morning and stopped off at a cafe for coffee. In addition to whales and seals, the coastal area here is also known for crayfish and lobster.
After coffee, we headed out to sea for some whale watching. We did see a sperm whale and on the way back a southern royal albatross. Both are the largest of their type. The sperm whale can be as long as our boat (as depicted in the mock-up picture below). The albatross has the longest wing span for a bird.

Next was a visit to the Ohau Point Fur Seal Colony. These seals have ears and are a non-migratory coastal species. This colony has about 3,000 seals. Their fur is brown when dry and appears black when wet.
