This morning we visited the Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei before going to Paihia. Here even the bathrooms are decorated, the floors purposely uneven and the roof covered with trees and plants. Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist who moved to New Zealand.
The artist's other work included stamps designed for UNESCO and a few countries, posters, and even carpets.
Afterwards, we drove to Paihia and took a passenger ferry to Russell, the oldest European settlement in New Zealand. We visited the Catholic Pompallier Mission and took a tour of its printery. The printery not only produced prayer books but also made leather covers and bound the books.
Our next stop was the Duke of Marlbourgh Hotel and Bar. It was site of the first licensed pub in New Zealand in 1840.
Then we retreated to our Airbnb for the rest of the day to enjoy the view.
